Facilitate an Action Area Workshop

Are you interested in FACILITATING an ACTION AREA Workshop?
Are you passionate about one of the below theme areas?
Do you want to hone your facilitation skills?

A bit of context…

In 2008 the participants at the RebELLEs Gathering produced and adopted the Manifesto of the RebELLEs Movement (http://www.rebelles.org/en/manifesto). The Manifesto represents our political basis of unity as a movement of young feminists, and it continues to nourish our reflections and guide our actions. For the 2011 Gathering, we will take this a step further by defining why and what we are collectively fighting against and towards as a movement. We will create and adopt a series of demands and alternatives within five action areas, modeled after the World March of Women (http://www.worldmarchofwomen.org/index_html/en). These demands will reflect the priorities for action of the young women and young feminists present at the gathering and will guide the actions of the RebELLEs movement for years to come.

On the afternoon of Saturday May 21st 2011, there will be simultaneous workshop sessions on the 5 action areas:

1. Violence Against Women
2. Poverty and Anti-Capitalism
3. Peace and Demilitarization
4. Decolonization and Anti-Racism
5. Women and the Environment.

Participants will be in one of the Action Area workshops, with approximately 25 other young feminists. The purpose of these workshops is to raise awareness around the issue, leading to the creation of 1 or 2 Demands, Actions or Alternatives. It will work in a three-step process:

1 - Discuss the issue, how it affects us as young women and the communities we are a part of and why it is important to focus on this area in order to create change. (1 hour)

2 – Identify key changes, demands or alternatives we want to see within this action area, what would be the benefit of these changes, how would it improve women’s lives? (45 minutes)

3 – Discuss and narrow down your choices in a group, ideally through consensus. The hope is that each action area group will be able to create 1 or 2 Demands, Actions or Alternatives. These should be political demands, tangible actions that we can engage in or alternatives we want to see in our communities. By the end of this section the group should have crafted a written demand or alternative that can be submitted to the Demands Committee. (1 hour)

WE ARE LOOKING FOR 20 ACTION AREA WORKSHOP FACILITATORS

They will present an introduction and background to the action area (developed by the OC) and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to share their positions and analysis on the issues. The facilitator will also facilitate a decision-making process around the group’s selected demand(s), ensuring that a final decision of one or two DEMANDS OR ALTERNATIVES has been created.

You will be provided with a template for how the workshop should be run as well as background information.
